Fantasy Reads – Invisible Frogs

After fifteen years of posting positive book reviews and recommending around 250 books by other authors, I hope I may be forgiven for mentioning one of my own books. My novel Invisible Frogs, which is mainly set in the world of Ancient Egyptian Myth, is now out in paperback. An eBook version will be available from Amazon this month. You do need a printed copy to fully appreciate the beautiful cover designs by the talented Meg Moseman. The paperback also has extra frogs.

James, Paula and Andrew are students at the Howard Carter Institute of Egyptology. When Andrew steals part of the forbidden Book of Thoth all three are plunged into the world of Egyptian Myth, where time can run forwards, backwards or round in circles. They witness Creation and find themselves acting out the roles of deities in increasingly violent myths. Each of the trio endures a form of death and a terrifying trip through the Egyptian Underworld before they learn to work together to overcome the forces of Chaos and find a way home.

How does uptight James cope with a plague of invisible frogs and an archaeology lesson from the Great Sphinx and why does he need to order 70,000 cocktails? Can shy American, Paula, deal with a baby god, the Great Chaos Serpent and a cosmic custard-pie fight and how does she stop the sun and raise the dead? Why has unreliable Andrew ended up with the head of an aardvark and will he escape from the curse of several mummies, the Crocodiles of the Four Directions and the 42 Judges of the Underworld? Find out in Invisible Frogs.

I spent most of my life studying the religion, mythology and magic of the Ancient Egyptians and I have published academic and children’s books on these topics. However, there are some things you learn that can only be put into novels. The Carter Institute is imaginary but it is based on cherished memories of a now demolished building which was part of the University of Oxford. I have woven numerous Egyptian myths and legends into Invisible Frogs so be aware that the story contains murders, massacres and a great many frogs and snakes. Myths are rarely gentle but they do contain beauty and hope. I shall start this new year with an Ancient Egyptian blessing for all my readers – May you live long, may you prosper, may you be healthy!
